Stikii LOVES Moms!

Sunday, May 13, 2012 is officially Mother’s Day – and we sure hope that none of you forgot! Stikii would like to wish all the mothers out there a VERY Happy Mother’s Day. After all, mothers tend to be our best customers so we would be nothing without them!

Mother’s Day is a day set aside to celebrate and honor all mothers and to appreciate the sacrifices and rewards of motherhood, maternal bonds and the influences of mothers in society. In the United States, Mother’s Day is celebrated on the second Sunday in May every year, and compliments Father’s Day, which is celebrated during the month of June.

Anna Marie Jarvis is recognized as the founder of Mother’s Day in the United States.  Though never a mother herself, the establishment of Mother’s Day in the U.S. originated from Jarvis’ celebrating the life of her own mother, who died on May 9, 1905. A small service was held on Sunday, May 12 to honor her life. Jarvis then campaigned to establish Mother’s Day as a national holiday in America, and then an international holiday. The holiday was deemed official in 1910 by the state of West Virginia, with the remaining states quickly following.

Mother’s Day is now one of the most commercially successful U.S. holidays, and is actually the most popular day of the year to dine in a restaurant! Special jewelry is created specifically for gifting on this day, along with specials on flowers, candy, baked goods, spa treatments and more. Carnations have come to represent Mother’s Day as a result of Anna Jarvis delivering 500 of them at the first celebration back in 1908. Many religious services have adopted the custom of giving away carnations and many people will pin a carnation to their shirts on this day. Evidently, carnations were Jarvis’ mother’s favorite flower.

Don’t forget to tell your mother how much you appreciate her on this Mother’s Day. Saying and expressing the words is the most meaningful gift one can give a mother. However, giving Mother’s Day gifts has also become a tradition associated with the holiday. Not sure what to give your mother this year? The following are some ideas that any mom is sure to enjoy!

  1. Flowers
  2. Spa treatment package
  3. Candles/fragrances
  4. Jewelry
  5. Gardening tools
  6. Family photos
  7. Wine
  8. Homemade gifts such as cards, crocheted items, painted flower pots, etc.
  9. Breakfast in bed
  10. The day off from cleaning duties
  11. Gift basket
  12. Use your imagination!!!

So from Stikii to every mom out there or anyone who has ever had a mother of their own (which, if we aren’t mistaken should be everyone), have a very Happy Mother’s Day. Moms, we appreciate all of your support!
