Walk-N-Roll with Coley & Stikii!

Saturday, May 5, 2012 marks the date for the Toledo 2012 Walk-N-Roll for Spina Bifida fundraiser/awareness event. The Walk-N-Roll, which will be held at The Shops at Fallen Timbers this weekend, is a family oriented, non-competitive walking even focused on raising awareness about Spina Bifida (SB) in the community and to celebrate the accomplishments of the 160,000+ individuals living in America with the condition. All proceeds collected during the event are used to promote programs and services for people living with SB. Every year the event is held in various locations across the country.

The name “Walk-N-Roll” relates to the sense of inclusiveness of those with SB and invokes the “sense of empowerment which the Spina Bifida Community embraces in all that it does”.  For those of you unaware of SB, it is the most commonly occurring complex birth defect in the United States. It occurs when the infant’s spine fails to close during the first month of pregnancy, thus leaving a permanent opening in the spinal column. According to the Spina Bifida Association (SBA), those born with Spina Bifida must learn to live with conditions such as hydrocephalus (fluid on the brain), full or partial paralysis, bladder and bowel complications, learning disabilities, depression, and deadly latex allergy as well as social issues. The Walk-N-Roll event focuses on helping those with SB and their bravery, and celebrates how truly wonderful each individual is.

This year, Stikii will be attending the event and walking along with Team Coley’s Roleys. Nicholas “Coley” Fulton (you may remember him from our previous blog “If the Shoe Fits, it Must Be Stikii”, and as one of our first ever Stikii Kids Club members), is a wonderful six-year-old boy from the Toledo area with Spina Bifida. After 16 surgeries and countless nights in the hospital, Coley still wakes up with a smile on his face and a wonderful outlook on life. Coley refuses to let SB define him as a person and truly focuses on the positives in life. Stikii is honored to support Coley and his team, as well as all of those with Spina Bifida. We invite you to please join the event, support the cause, and stop by the Stikii display (we will have our inflatable shoe, Stikii mobile, balloons, brochures and more!).

It was just a few months ago that Stikii discovered (thanks to Coley’s mom), that not only were are shoes unique and fun, but they were also an excellent fit for Coley and others with SB. Our shoes fit right over the leg braces without the need for special laces or the removal of inserts. It is a pleasure knowing that our product can make a difference in the lives of those with SB!  Stikii will continue providing its one-of-a-kind footwear solution to those with SB, and to help the cause in any way they can!
